Escape to a tropical paradise at The Orchid Show: Brazilian Modern, featuring beautiful displays of thousands of orchids throughout the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.

In its 7th year, brilliantly colored orchids and the lush tropical setting of a contemporary Brazilian garden await visitors. Miami-based landscape architect Raymond Jungles has created this contemporary Brazilian garden design, inspired by his mentor, Roberto Burle Marx, an icon of Brazilian design. The design features fountains, pools, and colorful mosaics combined with graceful palms, delicate orchids, bromeliads, and other native plants of Brazil. The orchids have been selected by the Manager of the Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections at the Botanical Garden and Curator of The Orchid Show, Marc Hachadourian and are featured throughout the Haupt Conservatory.

Beyond beauty, the show offers the chance to learn about orchids: the most diverse species of flower on earth, orchid preservation at The Garden, and ongoing research and conservation efforts by Botanical Garden scientists in Brazil. In addition, there are many educational activities including Chocolate and Vanilla Adventures in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, Home Gardening Demonstrations, and other exciting programming. Explore and Plan Your Visit at www.nybg.org for more details.

For its 5th anniversary, Psycho Clan decided that NIGHTMARE should actually be about nightmares so, as in years past, it conducted an online poll about its audience’s recurring bad dreams—and thousands responded! The creative team then selected the most twisted, demented responses, added some iconic recurring nightmares, and created a house that will force audiences to experience awake what few can handle asleep. With more special effects, more elaborate sets, and more evil baddies waiting to get you then ever before, NIGHTMARE: BAD DREAMS COME TRUE will bring your worst night terrors to screaming life.

As the beginning of fall comes this Sunday, most of the summer time events will now come to a close. Some of NY’s most historic places have already closed forever such as Coney Island Astroland Park. But another landmark will close forever, a yearly event ends and some are weekend events worth checking out as well as new beginnings for NYC. Enjoy the last days of summer weekend.

And soon to come will be the end of Shea Stadium so stay tuned.

Looking to tap into your artistic or creative spirit? This weekend, a new exhibit at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) will open. Experience the works of Van Gogh and the Colors of Night that will start this weekend all the way through to January. This exhibition will present new insight into Van Gogh's depictions of night landscapes, interior scenes, and the effects of both gaslight and natural light on their surroundings. Representing all periods of the artist's career, the exhibition will comprise over two dozen works of superlative quality—several of which have never been seen together, even though they were very clearly conceived with each other in mind. This is a rare opportunity to see the masterpieces of Van Gogh in this traveling special exhibition.

The major attraction this summer is Moore in America: Monumental Sculpture at The New York Botanical Garden, the largest outdoor exhibition of Henry Moore’s sculpture ever presented in a single venue in the United States, with 20 major pieces positioned throughout the Garden. Families can enjoy Moore for Kids in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Visitors can watch an informative documentary film, The Art of Henry Moore in the Arthur and Janet Ross Lecture Hall on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 12 and 2 p.m.

Haupt Conservatory. The show is a perfect indoor complement to Moore in America, the exhibition of Henry Moore sculpture on the Botanical Garden grounds, illustrating the artist’s belief that “the whole of Nature is an endless demonstration of shape and form.”

For those that were looking for the score on the Yankees game yesterday, well, it didn't happen. March 31st home opener was a wash out and it was postponed for tonight, April 1st at 7:05pm against the Blue Jays. Although, weather for tonight's game is also an issue. So will take 2 of the Yankees opening game move into take 3? Let's hope for the fans of the Yankees that the home opener gets the show on the road. For more information on tonight's game or for ticket information, visit www.yankees.com

Seeing stray animals really hurts my heart, so in lieu of that, the councilman of Queens is urging the city to open more animal shelters in Queens and Bronx. "Thousands of animals being euthanized and thousands of people who want to adopt pets and no shelters in the Bronx or Queens," said City Councilman Eric Gioia. It's sad to know that so many people are willing to adopt, but don't want to go through the hassle of going to another borough to get a pet, as if the boroughs were so far apart, but that is besides the point. "I am respectfully requesting that our city government end this interminable waiting period and work to uphold the law," said Gail Buchman of the ASPCA. The councilman says that the 12 million dollars that has been allocated for this purpose has just been sitting there. "There are thousands of people out there who want to adopt pets and there are thousands of pets who want to be adopted," he said. "What the city needs to do is connect the dots." Yes! Connect the dots, or is that too much to ask for? The goal of the city is to stop euthanizing animals by the year 2015, but if they continue to move this slow, it will not happen. Read more

Woo Hoo!! Yes my friends, it's that time again. BASEBALL TIME! If you thought that you would catch the game live at the stadium this season, you are wrong. Unless of course, you are willing to give your arm and leg (which serves them no purpose) in fair exchange for tickets. Their first game which is scheduled for September 21st, 2008 with the Orioles is sold out. Yep! Sold out! Zilch! Nada! The tickets went on sale yesterday and were sold out within minutes. "About 75 percent of the seats were already taken by season ticket holders. Scalpers are offering some of the best seats for sale online for as much as $17,000. Some fans are asking for more than $300 dollars for bleacher seats that are normally $14." Is that insane or what? I'll be right there with you watching it on TV unless, I had a generous angel from heaven to miraculously fly me there :), but I doubt it! Read and weep Yankees fans! But it ain't over 'till it's over.... - think24seven

This makes it the third time this year that we get to see this amazing thing happen with the moon and the earth. USA Today says, "As is the case with all lunar eclipses, the region of visibility will encompass more than half of our planet. Nearly a billion people in the Western Hemisphere, more than 1.5 billion in Europe and Africa, and perhaps another half-billion in western Asia will be able to watch — weather permitting — as the brilliant mid-winter full moon becomes a shadow of its former self and morphs into a glowing coppery ball." www.nomad4ever.com

There is something different about the eclipse this time, "the planet Saturn (magnitude +0.2) and the bright bluish star, Regulus (magnitude +1.4) will form a broad triangle with the moon's ruddy disk. Careful watchers will notice the moon changing its position with respect to the star and planet as it moves eastward through the Earth's shadow."

The moon will enter Earth's much darker umbral shadow at 1:43 on Feb. 21 by Greenwich or Universal time, which is 8:43 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the Eastern time zone, 7:43 p.m. Central time, 6:43 p.m. Mountain time and 5:43 p.m. Pacific time.

Seventy-eight minutes later the moon is entirely within the shadow, and sails on within it for 51 minutes (about average for a total lunar eclipse), until it begins to find its way out at the lower left (southeastern) edge.

The moon be completely free of the umbra by 9:09 p.m. Pacific time or 12:09 a.m. (Feb. 21) Eastern time.

Please read more

Apart from some rain, New York City has had pretty good weather this Winter season. February came and it was 62 degrees just last week. We all thought Winter was over or at least attempting to be over. Boy were we wrong! Winter has returned with a vengeance, with freezing temperatures, high winds and now, snow. It's supposed to snow from now until the rush hour period. Can you imagine what that's going to be like?

Bundle up New Yorkers, it can get worse!
After a few years have passed on the deadline, the Bronx County Hall of Justice is finally finished. It's said to be "one of the largest courthouses ever built in the U.S." and it finally opened Monday. This new courthouse will help move cases along much quicker with its 47 courtrooms and 7 grand jury rooms. According to Office of Court Administration chief of operations Ron Younkins, "It's been a long time coming, it was a very big and complex project, and it took a long time." Construction began in 2001 and was supposed to end in 2005. With major delays, the courthouse faced many problems like contaminated soil and a change of contractors. The cost? Originally $325 million, but by the opening it accumulated an estimated $421 million. The courthouse comes complete with a 200 car garage, but will not be opened anytime soon. "One of the levels of the garage is buckling a bit," said Younkins. " Hopefully, the problems of the new courthouse will be resolved! Read original story - think24seven
