www.space.com Tonight, February 20th, 2008, there will be a lunar eclipse for all to see. This makes it the third time this year that we get to see this amazing thing happen with the moon and the earth. USA Today says, "As is the case with all lunar eclipses, the region of visibility will encompass more than half of our planet. Nearly a billion people in the Western Hemisphere, more than 1.5 billion in Europe and Africa, and perhaps another half-billion in western Asia will be able to watch — weather permitting — as the brilliant mid-winter full moon becomes a shadow of its former self and morphs into a glowing coppery ball." www.nomad4ever.com

There is something different about the eclipse this time, "the planet Saturn (magnitude +0.2) and the bright bluish star, Regulus (magnitude +1.4) will form a broad triangle with the moon's ruddy disk. Careful watchers will notice the moon changing its position with respect to the star and planet as it moves eastward through the Earth's shadow."

The moon will enter Earth's much darker umbral shadow at 1:43 on Feb. 21 by Greenwich or Universal time, which is 8:43 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the Eastern time zone, 7:43 p.m. Central time, 6:43 p.m. Mountain time and 5:43 p.m. Pacific time.

Seventy-eight minutes later the moon is entirely within the shadow, and sails on within it for 51 minutes (about average for a total lunar eclipse), until it begins to find its way out at the lower left (southeastern) edge.

The moon be completely free of the umbra by 9:09 p.m. Pacific time or 12:09 a.m. (Feb. 21) Eastern time.

Please read more

Apart from some rain, New York City has had pretty good weather this Winter season. February came and it was 62 degrees just last week. We all thought Winter was over or at least attempting to be over. Boy were we wrong! Winter has returned with a vengeance, with freezing temperatures, high winds and now, snow. It's supposed to snow from now until the rush hour period. Can you imagine what that's going to be like?

Photo provided by: www.chadhuck.com

Bundle up New Yorkers, it can get worse!

New Yorkers know that New York is the place to be! We can move away for years, but we will still say that we are New Yorkers, even if we haven't visited in 25 years. It's in our blood to be patriotic to this grand city and we love it; the good, the bad- we will defend it to the very end. With that said, it seems as though the entire world also thinks it's the place to be. According to the CEO of NYC & Company George Fertitta, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding Robert C. Lieber and Cunard Line President Carol Marlow, it was estimated that 46 million people from around the world and the US visited New York City in 2007- up 5% from last year's high of 43.8 million. This resulted in the generation of 28 billion dollars alone in spending; just by tourists. Lieber says, "With the City well on its way to achieving the Mayor's goal of 50 million annual visitors in 2015, we've also increased our efforts to make New York even more welcoming to visitors. Our new partnership with Cunard will provide their passengers with a special welcome to the City and generate more excitement for the time they'll spend here." What else is there to say? New York is New York and will always be New York. Tourism is good for us because we need it for our economy. Besides, it's fun to see people looking up at the sky while walking around Times Square - think24seven

The restoration is said to last three years and will improve the overall look of facade, stairs and plaza. According to the Library officials, the project is expected to be finished by 2011; just in time for its centennial. One of their goals is to make the building more attractive in the nighttime and to restore its original marble white grandeur.

The 50 million restoration has already started and passers-by can actually see some parts of the building already covered in netting and the first set of scaffolding is scheduled for its appearance in February of 2008.

The New York City Public Library dates back to about 100 years ago, when a handful of people came up with a vision. With millions and millions of users, building a library was essential to many native New Yorkers. Surprisingly, it is a privately managed, non-for-profit organization that has been helping New Yorkers learn for many years, not to mention; it is a National Public Landmark. All libraries in the New York City Public Library system is free of charge to all.

Stick around until 2011 to witness a transformation of the New York City Public Library, you won’t be disappointed!
