The common bonds of tradition:
fabulous food and landmark building settings.

F & J interior Right in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, among the busy streets of the garment district, lies the newest location of Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouse restaurant. Their new site is in a townhouse that once belonged to legendary stage and screen actor John Barrymore. The recently renovated restaurant offers a warm, cozy ambiance and maintains much of the original architecture of Barrymore’s home. This link with the past is highlighted with the Barrymore Room, a part of the main dining area that used to be the actor’s library. The elegant room features walls with a beautiful dark wood finish, stained-glass ceilings and a mahogany fireplace—the ideal atmosphere for a romantic dinner or an elegant private function.

Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouse locations, whether in or out of the city, have the common bonds of tradition, fabulous food and landmark building settings. Each is known for dry-aged, prime-aged, rib eye and sirloin steaks served in generous proportions to satisfy any steak lover’s appetite. Also on offer are a variety of appetizers, cocktails and several excellent fish selections including swordfish, Chilean sea bass and salmon. Partnering a sophisticated glass of fine wine with your steak or seafood is easy. The extensive wine list allows ordering by glass or bottle, across a wide price range.

Steak

Keep an eye out for special or seasonal appetizers. I was fortunate enough to come across the ‘Endives’ salad which contained sliced apples, blue cheese and walnuts and was drizzled with a creamy dressing that is light and delicious. I added on some fresh pepper which gave the already tasty combination a spicy boost. The light, refreshing salad was the perfect way to cool down during the hot summer days, and left enough room to enjoy the main course.

If steak or seafood isn’t your thing, not to worry. The pasta or chicken dishes don’t disappoint. The ‘Saffron Risotto’ will definitely satisfy your appetite. A complex dish, the risotto is infused with the delicate and delicious combination of mushrooms, asparagus and paramigian cheese that makes up the unique flavoring of this dish. You also can’t go wrong with Frankie & Johnnie’s breaded chicken breast, tender on the inside and crispy on the outside, accompanied by spinach sautéed in garlic sauce.

Waiter

After finishing a hearty meal, if your stomach has room or if your sweet tooth is getting the best of you, Frankie & Johnnie’s offers a full selection of tea, coffee and desserts. The helpful and friendly wait-staff is full of recommendations from the dessert list that changes daily. Of note, this restaurant is one of the few places in New York that offers authentic Italian coffee: the perfect accompaniment to hot apple pie with ice cream, traditional tiramisu or chocolate mousse as a nice finish to any meal.

So take a break from the hectic pace of Midtown, and let the nostalgic romance of legendary actor John Barrymore’s former home wash over you, while the critically acclaimed chefs of Frankie & Johnnie’s set to work sating your appetite.
